Our
5th Year as a School of Excellence!
March 2008

PRINCIPAL’S
MESSAGE:
Dear
Loch Lomond Parents,
The
first semester is over and it has been a real pleasure to be the
Principal here
at Loch
Lomond Elementary School. Our school
has a great history of having
served our community for almost fifty years and more recently a School of Excellence for the last five
years. Many outstanding students,
parents, teachers, and administrators have passed through our doors and
we have
reason to be proud.
We
also have reason to be optimistic about our future and we would like to
make
sure you are a part of it. In the near
future, we will be seeking help from those parents available to assist
with the
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and the Advisory Council. Please give some thought to serving on either
or both groups. If interested, I would
be happy to discuss our vision and plans, and help identify ways in
which you
can serve.
To
make all of our parents and visitors feel more welcome, we have added
four new
“Visitor” parking spaces to the front of the school.
Three have a one hour limit and the fourth
has a 15 minute limit. We ask that you
please use one of those four spaces and not park in the circle
immediately in
front of the school. The circle is
reserved for school buses, emergency vehicles and other county vehicles
making
deliveries. Private vehicles parking in
the circle creates a real safety issue and we greatly appreciate your
support
by using a visitor space.
Also,
in the next few months we will be hosting a couple of morning coffees
to invite
you to come in and meet with our staff in an informal and casual
setting. This will give us an opportunity
to listen to
your interests and concerns, and give you an opportunity to get to know
us a
little better. Look for more information
to be out on this after Spring Break.
Thank
you again for trusting us with your children and giving us the
opportunity to
help provide them the best education possible.
Sincerely,
Mr.
Horan
Principal

STUDENT COUNCIL
ORGANIZATON
by Mrs. Andersen-Kayne
and Mrs. McKay
SCO
members continue to do a great job assisting with Loch
Lomond’s morning announcements. The
SCO also continues to sponsor community service
activities and
school spirit days.
Last
month, we held a contest to see which class had the
most school spirit by wearing a Scottie shirt or green or white on
Fridays. Congratulations to Mrs. Shorts’
class who had the most students wearing these colors on Fridays in
February! We
will continue the contest to see which
class has the most Scottie Pride in March!
The SCO
also sponsored a Valentine’s Colors Day on February
14. It was great to see everyone wearing
pink or red that day. Students also
created Valentine cards which were sent to Prince
William Hospital. The hospital was very thankful for the cards
which were placed on patients’ lunch trays on Valentine’s Day. We were told that the cards brought a smile
to the faces of everyone who received them!
The SCO
would like to thank all students, parents and
teachers for their support! Have a Safe
and Happy Spring Break!
COMPUTER
LAB
by Mrs. McKay
During March, we will continue
working with spreadsheets,
word processing and drawing programs and the Internet.
Kindergarten and first grade students
celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by reading a book from a CD and working
in a Dr.
Seuss website. Second graders are exploring
word processing. Third graders are
working on multiplication spreadsheets, and fourth graders are working
on
spreadsheets tracking the color and number of Smarties candies.
Fifth
graders are reviewing and learning new word processing skills.
Please remember that Loch Lomond
participates in the “Recycle for the Students Program”. Please
save and place your used computer
cartridges in a sandwich bag. Have your
child bring them to school. Our school
receives one dollar for every empty cartridge collected. Recycle
Ink, LLC will also make regular
pick-ups at your place of business. Call
703-684-9304 to sign up!
LIBRARY
NEWS
Thank
you to the PTO for sponsoring Mr. Fred Bowen's
author visit for Loch
Lomond students. The
author of nine children’s books, Fred Bowen has turned his love of
sports into
a second career. Students heard
first
hand from the author how ideas for books are formed. They were advised
to write
their ideas down, share their writing and then listen for suggestions
on how
they might improve what has been written. Mr.
Bowen’s dynamic presentation emphasized the importance
of reading,
writing and persevering in the quest for excellence.
Accentuating his talk with replicas of the
first baseball gloves, Mr. Bowen captivated his audience with humor and
energy.
Most
students
had read Mr. Bowen’s books in preparation for his visit to Loch Lomond. The
Scottie Society of Readers, the school book club participated in
activities
based on reading Winners Take All, a story examining ethics and honesty
. In a multidisciplinary approach,
teachers
included the arts, music and physical education in planning for Fred
Bowen
Day. Teachers used the practical writing
tips to motivate students in the classroom. Two
lucky winners of the trivia contest were awarded
autographed books
at the end of the inspirational day. Mr.
Bowen’s appearance was sponsored by the Loch Lomond PTO in order to
excite
students about reading and writing. Segments
of the author visit and an interview with Mr.
Bowen were filmed
by Prince William County Schools and will be shown on School Focus on
PWCS TV.
DISMISSAL AND
PARKING LOT SAFETY
The safety of our students is our
number one priority. Please review our rules for dismissal and
abide by them to keep everyone safe.
Car riders must be picked up in a car at the car circle. Please
wait in the car loop line and do not park
your car and walk over to pick up your child. Students will only
be released to parents in cars that sit in the circle.
When leaving the building please walk on the sidewalk at all
times. Please do not cut
through the parking lot as cars and buses are driving through at
various times.
If you child is a walker, they will be dismisssed with the bell out the
front doors of the building.
We appreciate all your support in this manner to keep the school a safe
place for all students and families.
