SKILLS TO REVIEW

Have you ever heard of a group of musicians who rehearsed everyday from September through June, but then took a 3-month summer vacation without practicing at all?  Or have you ever heard of a professional athlete who never exercised during the off-season?  What would happen to their performance?

What about children during the summer vacation - does it make sense for them to stop learning for half of June, July, and August?

Your children have worked extremely hard all year and have made tremendous gains in reading and math.  It would be a shame for them to lose all that they've worked so hard to learn if their learning takes a vacation!!  I don't mean that they need to work 6 hours every day.  I do mean that they should read at least 90 minutes every day (not in 1 sitting, though 1 sitting should be at least 1/2 hour) and they should review math facts and problems for 1/2 hour each day.  That totals 2 hours of work that could be made fun!

September's success will depend on the summer's review.  If your child comes back to school having read every day and practiced math skills, he/she will have a jump start to another terrific year.  Your help and support are what we need.  Your child deserves this for all he/she has done this year.

Each grade level has prepared a list of skills that should be practiced during the summer to prepare your child for the upcoming school year.  Please review these lists and use them as a guide to work with your child(ren) over the summer.
