Summer Skills for Rising Fifth Graders

2008-2009

Dear Parents,

Montclair’s fourth graders have made much progress this year and they are ready for fifth grade!  However, summer can take a toll on a child’s academic progress.  The fifth grade teachers at Montclair have some tips to keep your child’s mind active and ready for fall.

Ø      Keep your child reading a variety of books in a variety of genres.  Discuss the books with your child, including character motivation, plot, problems, events, settings, resolutions, and how these things affect the story.  Read along with them, and even out loud to them!  You’ll enjoy the books too!

Ø      Have your child keep a journal or diary this summer.  They can write about their books, trips, friends, or even a story or two!

Ø      Continue to practice all math facts with your child.  Let them figure tips at restaurants or how much something costs, and play games that involve statistics and strategy. They should have quick recall of ALL math facts: Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Continue to challenge your child’s mind to make the transition to fifth grade that much easier in the fall.  Summer can be a great time of learning!  Good luck and have fun!
