BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP "BEST PRACTICE CLUB" WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Corporations and schools recognized at Chamber breakfast

Principal John Miller and Eric Simenauer from Stonewall Middle School with Stephanie Lockhart and Linda Haledjian from Lockheed MartinThree Prince William County school-business partnerships are the winners of the 2005-06 Business Partnership Awards sponsored by Partnership Prince William. Partnerships between BB&T (Branch Bank and Trust) and Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School; Cardinal Bank and Louise A. Benton Middle School ; and Lockheed Martin and Stonewall Middle School were all recognized for significantly improving academic achievement and work readiness skills for PWCS students. The winners were announced by Superintendent of Schools Steve Walts at the Prince William County Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce’s annual Honor Roll Principal Linda Leibert, Assistant Principal Steve Webb, and Business Partnership Coordinator Lisa Jones from Benton Middle School  with Karen Denas from Cardinal Bank. Breakfast held late last month.

As Business Partnership Award winners this year, both the schools and businesses join previous winners named to the Partnership Prince William “Best Practice Club” for their extraordinary contributions that are aligned with Prince William County Public Schools’ instruction, curriculum, and strategic goals. Throughout the next year, the winners will receive high visibility through School Division publications, Web sites, and local, state, and national conferences.

Walts, in his “State of the Schools” presentation to the Chamber members, talked about how business involvement with schools benefits student achievement. Citing the business partnership Becky Apperson and Mike Pybus from BB&T with King Elementary Principal Laura Pumphreyaward winners as examples of how businesses and schools work together, Walts expressed appreciation for the past and continuing support of business leaders. “These activities connect students to the real world – this is the greatest benefit of all,” said Walts. “Students not only engage in hands-on activities, they meet adults from the business world who are mentors and role models. Nothing sends a stronger message of opportunity.”
