Eight PWCS high schools have been deemed among the best in the nation by Newsweek magazine. The May issue lists Brentsville District, Forest Park, Gar-Field, C.D. Hylton, Osbourn Park, Potomac, Stonewall Jackson, and Woodbridge high schools in the top 1,100 high schools nationwide, proving once again that Prince William County Public Schools offers a World-Class education to all of its students.
"It comes as no surprise that our schools would be listed in the top five percent of America,” says Schools Superintendent Steven L. Walts. “We hire the best staff, we offer the most innovative programs, and we continuously shape the School Division to b etter meet the needs of our students.”
Public schools were ranked by Newsweek according to a ratio that divides the number of advanced placement and/or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school by the number of graduating seniors. According to the magazine, these scores show which schools “help regular kids succeed in college.”
Rankings were based on student data collected in 2005. As Battlefield and Freedom High schools are PWCS’ newest high schools with no graduating seniors for the 2004-05 school year, they were not considered for this year’s report.
Prince William County schools have consistently made the Newsweek “America’s Best” list for years, a trend that Walts says will undoubtedly continue. “I am proud of the success we have achieved and look forward to many more as we work to provide a World-Class education. The article says that our schools are already great, but I have no doubt that they will continue to get even better.”
