This was the primary message from the visiting adults who came to Marumsco Hills Elementary School to talk with students about what they do for a living at the school’s Career Day on June 14. As they passed around tools of their trades, the presenters drove home the point that working hard at school and being good citizens would open many doors and help the students reach their goals.

The chiropractor and physical therapist came dressed in their work uniforms to talk about how they help people; as did Pastor Jeff Carter who donned the ceremonial robes he uses for weddings and funerals. Carter also picked a student from the class to slip into a fireman’s garb - the boots, coveralls, and coat he wears when he’s acting as chaplain for the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue.

“Being a magician involves lots of science and math,” advised Lawrence Cummings as he Students watch professional magicianperformed a rope trick in Mary Carroll’s second-grade classroom. Outside, Prince William County police officers Greg Moore and Rhonda Dixon introduced students to police equipment, a police motorcycle, a squad car with flashing lights, and their K-9 partner “Striker.”

Many of the students had already decided on their career path before the day started. Among the group was an aspiring F.B.I. agent, archaeologist, cartoonist, music teacher, two doctors, and a very nicely dressed fashion designer.
