IN THE SPIRIT OF FOOD, FUN, AND FASHION

Yorkshire Elementary’s Multicultural Celebration brings the school community together to celebrate its many cultures.

Participants try AjaqaqWith varying degrees of success, adults and children alike struggled to catch small rings on sticks as they played Ajaqaq, a popular Eskimo game, during their visit to the continent of North America. Participants learned that the Eskimos on the northwest coast of Canada play a variety of games to while away long, dark winter days. These natives once believed that playing Ajaqaq would make the sun return sooner.

And, while it was dark outside due to the heavy rains falling on Yorkshire Elementary the night of the school’s biggest event of the year, that did not diminish the number or spirit of attendees who came to the multicultural celebration to learn about the cultures of their classmates and countrymen by enjoying fabulous foods, unique games, captivating performances, and a full-fledged multicultural fashion show.

Students watched a Renshi instructor demonstrate the classical ORyu Te lesson and demokinawan martial art of Ryu Te. They made Ojibway dream catchers in the manner of the Great Lake and Northern Plains Native Americans who believed that the night was filled with the spirits of dreams. And, likely most popular of all, students and their families visited the five distinct cultural sections of the school to see the vibrant decorations and displays and to sample the many and varied dishes from the tables overflowing with delicious foreign fare. In one short evening, families, staff, and students had the opportunity to experience the cultures of many countries.
