Prince William’s First School Day Starts Smoothly

Students board bus on first day of school.

Superintendent of Schools Steve Walts can tell you that most buses were on time this morning -- certainly, the one he rode to Westridge Elementary School was on schedule.

He rode the bus, he said, “to recognize the important work of the school bus drivers.” Dr. Walts rides bus with students.Six minutes later, Principal Pat Hayden welcomed Dr. Walts as the bus off-loaded students at Westridge.

During the morning, Dr. Walts spoke individually with some teachers and parents, and visited several classrooms.

Westridge is the first of the “82 schools in 82 days” the Superintendent plans to visit to underscore how important he views “what goes on in the classroom, and to show that to the staff and to the students.”  Dr. Walts will also be visiting Minnieville Elementary School, Saunders Middle School, and C.D. Hylton High School today.

The school division is expecting 69,000 students. Across the county, teachers, principals, and support staff are prepared for the first day of school -- “We are ready to roll,” Dr. Walts said.
