Stonewall Middle School is the latest school to offer banking services on-site as Synergy One Federal Credit Union has partnered with SMS to open a student-run credit union, known as the Synergy One Sabres branch. This partnership brings the first student run, in-school credit union to a Prince William County middle school.
Synergy One will work with the Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning (SOL) objectives to provide students with fun, hands-on, interactive games and activities that teach basic math and other financial skills. In addition, the in-school credit union will give the student employees a chance to earn real-life job experience that they can use later in life.
William White, Synergy One president and CEO, states, “Teaching youth the value of saving at an early age is imperative and we believe this innovative approach will educate our young people on basic money management skills.”
School Board Chairman Lucy S. Beauchamp, along with School Board Member Don Richardson (Gainesville) and Associate Superintendent for Area I Alison Nourse-Miller, represented the School Division at a ceremony on March 9, where Miriam Rigal from Synergy One FCU and Stonewall Middle School Principal John Miller signed the partnership agreement to bring student banking to the school.
