Signal Hill students are constantly demonstrating their kindness and generosity by helping and supporting many worthwhile causes. This year through the SCA, the classes at Signal Hill raised more than $800 for their sister school Ruby Young Elementary in DeSoto, Texas. The money raised by the PWCS students was used to purchase school supplies and uniforms for the many Katrina victims who are attending that school because they have lost their homes in Louisiana.
“We picked Ruby Young Elementary as our sister school because they had a large number of Katrina Evacuees relocate there,” says Signal Hill Principal Cindy Wrenn. “These students came to Texas with nothing.”
Now, thanks to assistance by Signal Hill’s business partner, Comcast Communications, both schools will get to experience the latest in Internet communications via Web cameras. The company generously gave both Signal Hill and Ruby Young Elementary a camera, and Comcast is providing links to both the Virginia and Texas campuses for free. With these new technologies in place, principals from both schools hope to use the cameras to enhance learning while also allowing the sister schools to communicate with one another.
Wrenn personally presented the school with the donated Web camera while she was in Texas attending a conference. She also brought them a giant four-page card that the entire student body created for the Texas students. In return, Ruby Young Elementary students gave Wrenn a homemade quilt to bring back to Virginia, to place on display with a wreath the school sent to Signal Hill earlier in the year.
