Superintendent of Schools Steven L. Walts joined several PWCS recruiters recently at the National Minority Careers in Education Exposition held at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. The annual job fair, which is one of the largest of its kind nationwide, provided school districts with a unique opportunity for recruiting minority teachers and administrators. Since there is a shortage of minorities pursuing teaching as a career, this event served an important role in PWCS’ recruiting efforts.
The event attracted more than 400 representatives from over 120 educational institutions representing more than 250 schools and agencies from across the United States, the Department of Defense Dependents’ Schools that are hiring for schools at America’s armed service installations throughout the world, and state education departments such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, Florida, Vermont, and New York.
Prince William County representatives spoke to more than 120 candidates at the expo, and a dozen early-hire agreements were issued for various instructional positions throughout the county.
The School Division serves a minority student population of 55.4 percent, a number that continues to increase with each school year. Currently, only 22.2 percent of the School Division’s instructional employees are minorities, and while that number is constantly growing thanks to the division’s recruiting practices, minority recruitment remains one of the School Division’s strategic goals.
