Reading Program Annotations

Kindergarten   Grade One   Grade Two   Grade Three   Grade Four  Grade Five

    The Summer Reading Program is to encourage reading over the summer. Student participation in the program is voluntary (by choice). Students in rising Kindergarten through rising Second grade should read 5 or more book choices over the summer. Students in rising Third grade through rising fifth grade should read 3 or more books over the summer. All books should be on the student's reading level or above. Third through Fifth are only reading three books because they are expected to read chapter books.  Below are just some suggested titles and/or authors for summer reading. Please feel free to allow your child to choose books s/he enjoys.   The Prince William Public Library program may be used if you would prefer to do so.

 Note Keeping Strategies
1  At home, illustrate a picture depicting an event from each book read  Assemble all pictures into a booklet.  Ask an adult to write the title of the book over the picture. 
Evaluation Strategies
1   Bring book to class during the first week of school.  Children will be encouraged to share illustrations with classmates.

Evaluation Strategies
1  Bring five of the pictures to school, that you drew for the follow-up activity to show to your new classmates.  We will display them in your classroom.

1 Do a reading response journal for each book read.  Include the title, author, main characters, important events and the setting. These will be turned in during the first week of school.
Evaluation Strategies
1 Response journals will be turned in during the first week of school.  After a review at the beginning of the school year, students will take Accelerated Reading tests on the books.
