Dear Tyler Parents,

On May 29th, Tyler Elementary School was recognized for earning the Virginia Index of Performance Excellence Award at the division-wide Classy Awards Ceremony at Hylton High School.  This award is a great honor and is given to schools that meet all state and federal accountability benchmarks in reading, math, science, history for at least 2 consecutive years.  Schools must have also exceeded accreditation standards and met all the requirements of the "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) Act for at least 2 consecutive years in order to receive this award.  Congratulations to our Tyler students, staff and community for attaining such a high academic standard.

As many of you may know, Ms. Barna and her family will be moving to Pennsylvania this summer.  On behalf of the Tyler Staff and Community I would like to thank Ms. Barna for her dedication and commitment to Tyler Elementary during the last 4 years.  She has passionately been an advocate for students and instrumental in the development of many student centered programs at Tyler.  Best wishes and good luck to Ms. Barna as she embarks on her new endeavors.

Ms. Julie Chamberlain, currently a School Counselor at Marshall Elementary in Manassas, will be joining our staff as School Counselor for the 2008-2009 school year.  Ms. Chamberlain brings 13 years of school counseling experience and 7 years of classroom teacher experience to our school.  She will bring a wealth of experience, knowledge, and expertise to our school including being recognized as Virginia Middle School Counselor of the year (2001-02).  Please welcome her to Tyler Elementary.

I would like to thank our Tyler parents and students for a tremendous school year.  It has been a pleasure to get to know and work with such a wonderful community.  I look forward to working with you next year as we continue to promote a top quality academic program for all students.  Please review our summer reading list and supply list for next school year on the Tyler website:  http://www.pwcs.edu/tyler/ .   Have a great summer.

Sincerely,

Matthew Phythian

Principal

Nurse Kay News from the Clinic
Kay Hoepker, School Nurse

As the last few days of the school year wind down, it is never too early to start thinking about next year! If your child has any health condition that may require occasional care during the school day, using the summer months to complete a Health Treatment Plan will ease the back-to-school rush. This applies to children with asthma, life threatening allergies, diabetes, seizures, or a host of many other ailments.  Each year a new Health Treatment Plan needs to be completed or updated by the parent and their child’s physician.  Plan early and make your doctor appointments now so that you can avoid being caught short in August. Please stop into the school and ask what paperwork is needed to ensure your child’s best school health management.

All medications that have been kept in the school’s clinic must be picked up on or before the last day of school.   Any medication not picked up before June 13 at 3:30 pm will be discarded.  Nothing will be saved over the summer.  No medication can be sent home on the bus; a parent must pick it up!

Have a safe and happy summer.  Remember to use sunscreen and to protect your eyes with sunglasses. Please do not forget to use bike helmets, wrist, and knee guards for added safety this summer.

Attention parents of fifth grade students!

A Tdap booster is mandatory for attendance in the sixth grade. Without proof of this immunization or physician documentation of why your child can not get the shot, your child will not be able to enroll in school for the 2008-09 school year. Immunizations can be obtained at the Prince William County Health Department, physician offices, or military clinics. Documentation of the immunization will be accepted in the Tyler office until June 13.  After that date, please deliver the documentation to your child’s middle school office.

Sincerely,

Kay Hoepker
School Nurse

Spring Into Reading – Reading Incentive Program

Congratulations to our Tomcat Readers!  After the first week of our reading incentive program, Tyler students have read over 62,768 minutes!  Wow!!!

Remember to keep track of every minute read – even if you read over your grade level’s minimum requirement.  There will be an award for the most minutes read by a student in each grade level.

The minimum minutes to read are:
Kindergarten – 1st Grade – read 15 minutes per night.
2nd – 3rd Grade – read 20 minutes per night.
4th – 5th Grade – read 30 minutes per night.
These are the minimum requirements, but it is great if you can read and record additional minutes!

The goal is for Tyler students to read a total of 500,000 minutes by May 2nd!  That is 83,333 minutes per week.  Keep up the good work!
