Bel Air Elementary School receives flag of excellence.During the months of January through May, 2007 staff at several of the 28 Prince William County Schools of Excellence are receiving accolades from the School Board and area superintendents as celebrations take place across the division to highlight last year's (2005-06) achievements.

Schools that attain this designation must demonstrate high levels of performance on the SOL tests for two different groups of students, those beginning that school year on grade level and those beginning the school year below grade level.

To obtain the highest rating, each fully accredited school must ensure that 97 percent of students beginning the year on or above grade level pass the SOL tests. They must also ensure that 55 percent of students beginning the year below grade level pass the SOL tests.

Osbourn Park High School in Manassas is the only division school to receive the designation since its inception under Edward Kelly's administration in 2000-01. For that honor, Osbourn Park administration will receive a check in the amount of $7,000, along with a plaque, and a commemorative flag.

At the other celebrations, school administration and staff are presented with a commemorative flag, a plaque, and a check to be used at the school's discretion. Schools receive $1,000 for each year the School of Excellence designation is obtained.

Two schools earned the distinction for the first time; one school is being recognized as a School of Excellence for the second time; eight schools are third-time recipients of this honor; five schools will be recognized as four-time Schools of Excellence recipients; four schools have achieved this distinction for the fifth consecutive year; and seven schools are celebrating their sixth year as Schools of Excellence.
