The Virginia Race to GED initiative, developed by former Governor Mark Warner, is designed to encourage individuals lacking a high school credential to return to earn a GED certificate.

The General Educational Development (GED) Test is a battery of five comprehensive tests in mathematics, writing, science, social studies, and science. The test is designed to measure skills that are acquired during four years of high school.

Upon successful completion of these five test batteries, a GED Certificate is awarded.

The test is usually given on the first and third Thursday of the month at the Prince William County Public Schools Adult Learning Center, 14800 Joplin Road, Manassas (Independent Hill). No test will be offered in July. Call 703.791.8388 for specific dates.

High school graduates and GED completers can earn an average of $7,000 more each year.

Individuals with a GED can:

• Obtain employment or advance in their current position.
• Enter a postsecondary education institution or technical/training program.
• Prepare for future trends in which approximately 70% of all jobs will require some type of technical training or certificate.

What is the age requirement to take the GED Test?

The GED Test is designed for adults 18 years of age and older. Individuals under the age of 18 should contact the Office of Student Management and Alternative Programs for more information.

Is there a state residency requirement?

No. Individuals are not required to be a resident of the state of Virginia, but are required to present a valid state or government issued photo identification to register for the test.

What is the minimum score required to pass the GED Test?

A minimum score of 2,250 is required for the total overall score with a minimum score of 410 on each individual subject area. (An average score of 450 on each test.)

How long does it take to receive my test results?

Individuals should receive their test results one to two weeks after taking the test.

What are my options if I don't pass the test?

Individuals may take each of the GED subject areas three times in one calendar year (January - December). Traditional classroom and distance learning GED Preparation courses are also available to assist you with your studies.
