Seven elementary school students smiling. 100% of our schools are accredited! Positively PWCS

The Virginia Department of Education announced today that all eligible PWCS schools are accredited based on 2018-19 data, compared with a statewide accreditation rate of 92 percent. This is the second consecutive year for 100 percent accreditation. PWCS is the largest school division in the state with all schools accredited without any conditions.

“Congratulations to our students, teachers, support staff, and school leaders for this recognition of their continued focused and hard work,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Walts.

The latest results reflect VDOE’s updated and expanded accountability standards. They measure performance on multiple school-quality indicators, not just student achievement on Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.

Elementary and middle schools are evaluated on the following:

  • Overall proficiency and growth in English reading/writing achievement (including progress of English learners toward English-language proficiency);
  • Overall proficiency and growth in mathematics;
  • Overall proficiency in science;
  • English achievement gaps among student groups;
  • Mathematics achievement gaps among student groups; and
  • Chronic absenteeism.

High schools are evaluated based on the following:

  • Overall proficiency in English reading/writing and progress of English learners toward English-language proficiency;
  • Overall proficiency in mathematics;
  • Overall proficiency in science;
  • English achievement gaps among student groups;
  • Mathematics achievement gaps among student groups;
  • Graduation and Completion Index;
  • Dropout rate; and
  • Chronic absenteeism.

Jenkins Elementary School, which opened this school year, is conditionally accredited for 2019-20 because it is new and no data is available yet for that school.
