Accreditation

In PWCS, teachers of gifted learners shall meet an eighteen-hour accreditation requirement with training for meeting the needs of gifted/advanced learners. Teachers listed below have five years from their date of hire (in one of the positions) to meet the accreditation requirement.

Grades K-5 Classroom teachers of classes with any identified gifted students.
Grades 6-8 Teachers of one of the five core classes with five or more gifted students in any one class.
Teachers of one of the five core classes designated as Advanced Placement (AP), pre-AP, International Baccalaureate (IBDP, pre-IB, or IBMYP), or Cambridge (AICE or IGCSE).

Six of the eighteen hours are required to be specific training in the needs of gifted learners and differentiation for gifted learners.

The remaining 12 hours can include courses designated as GFT in the Professional Development Catalog, AB/IB/AICE training, gifted conferences, and some EXT/content courses (preapproved as gifted credit). Teachers who hold a masters degree in a content area (i.e. Math, Science, History, English) can fulfill the 12 hours via the masters degree.  Teachers who serve on a county IDP committee can use up to 6 hours of committee time for the accreditation requirement.

Teachers who have taken a graduate course SPECIFICALLY in gifted education (not a survey of "exceptional" students) or who hold the Virginia endorsement in gifted education, can submit documentation for this to cover the 18 hours.

Accreditation reports are sent to principals twice each year. If you feel the hours on the report are not accurate, please email
overtojm@pwcs.edu
so that your record can be amended. Because the ERO catalog is not connected to the gifted accreditation database, completion of course work is not automatically entered in the database. The documentation form available on the Intranet should be submitted when course work is complete.

Endorsement

Teachers interested in a Virginia licensure add-on endorsement in Gifted Education are required to complete 4 graduate courses (in an approved program) and a 45 hour practicum. Teachers designated as Gifted Education Resource Teachers have three years from their date of hire to complete the endorsement process. More information can be found on the Intranet.
