ABOUT KILBY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Kilby Elementary School opened in 1959.  In 1971, the PTA urged the renaming of the school for its first principal, R. Dean Kilby, who served there from 1959 to 1971.

COMMUNITIES SERVED

Kilby students reside in the communities of Marumsco Village and Marumsco Hills.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Kilby Elementary houses an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program and offers extended day kindergarten to its students. Kilby students participate in DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and an annual Science Fair.  On Monday evenings, community volunteers offer extra help at the Monday Night Tutorial and students in grades three through five also benefit from an after-school SOL remediation program.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES & SPORTS

Kilby fifth graders can serve on Safety Patrol and all students enjoy participation in Reading is Fundamental.  The school boasts an active SCA and Reading Buddies program in which fourth and fifth grade students read to their first grade partners.

On Thursday afternoons, Kilby students are welcome to participate in the Tiger Care program, offered by community volunteers; and Girl Scouts meet at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Kilby parents can join the PTA and serve on the Advisory Council.  Some offer their time to pop popcorn on Friday mornings.  The Kilby community enjoys spending time together at the school's Ice Cream Social, Cake Walk and Hispanic Family Night.  Adult Education Classes in English are offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

WHAT MAKES OUR SCHOOL UNIQUE?

Kilby is a small, diverse and hard-working neighborhood school of about 320 children.  The school is within walking distance for 95 percent of its students.  The staff has made a commitment to the academic success of each and every student.
