| ABOUT OUR SCHOOL |

Neabsco Elementary School opened in 1969 to serve the Dale City Community. Neabsco, which is a Woodland Indian name, is taken from the Neabsco Creek which runs through Dale City.

| SPECIAL PROGRAMS |
Neasbco Elementary houses a Headstart Program, a Special Education preschool program and two center based programs for students with Emotional Disturbance. It also includes the K-5 regular education program, a speech program, a program for students with learning disabilities along with an ever growing English as a Second Language Program.
Neabsco has 124 students from grades 1-5 in the ESOL program. The majority of the students in the ESOL program speak Spanish, Urdu, and Twi. The majority of the students come to Neabsco in the ESOL program from El Salvador, Pakistan, Mexico and Honduras. Neabsco has an interpreter on staff for our Spanish speakers and three staff members that are fluent in Spanish. Other Programs: Neabsco is the recipient of a Reading First Grant from the federally funded No Child Left Behind Act. Neabsco has a reading coach along with a core reading program that is aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) as a result of the Reading First Grant.
The Comprehensive School Reform Grant was also awarded to Neabsco which provides for the school’s library to be opened to the community in the summer, books mailed to “at promise” children over the summer, a book exchange program within the school, and before and after school tutoring. Title I Reading and Math programs are also provided at Neabsco. Neabsco has full day kindergarten for 50% of their students.
The FBI crime lab from Quantico has a partnership with Neabsco and provides support during the school year and on weekends to prepare our STARS for their science fair projects. Extra Curricular Activities: Neabsco fifth graders can serve as Safety Patrols. All students are members of the SCA which helps with community service projects like food drives and Pennies for Patients and Jump Rope for Heart. The Girl Scouts and the 4-H Club meet at Neabsco in the evenings. Neabsco sponsors a running/walking club after school for students, parents and staff to promote aerobic fitness. |
| OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT |
Parent and Community Involvement: Parents at Neabsco are encouraged to be involved in the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) and the Parent Advisory Council. Each grade level has a Back to School Night as well as an SOL night for parents in the content areas. The Title One programs for reading and math sponsor family nights that provide games to take home which promote practice in reading and math skills.
Partnerships: Neabsco is proud of its community partnerships with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge # 43, and Wal-Mart. Their contributions are greatly appreciated by students and staff. |
