ABOUT SIGNAL HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Garden of Knowledge

Signal Hill Elementary was opened in 2000 as a replacement school for Parkside Elementary School . Parkside Elementary originally shared the building where Parkside Middle School now fully resides. We are named for nearby Signal Hill, a Confederate observation post. Civil War soldiers posted there warned of the Union effort to turn the flank of the Southern position during the initial stages of the First Battle of Manassas. Because of the signals used it is cited as the first use of telecommunication in a battle.

COMMUNITIES SERVED

Signal Hill’s large attendance area stretches from Yorkshire on the Rt. 28 corridor to Hunter’s Ridge on the Prince William Parkway to the majority of the Buckhall community continuing as far as Hampton Grove on the Davis Ford corridor.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Signal Hill classroomSignal Hill is proud to be a French Foreign Language School. French is provided for all first through fifth graders. Content is supported and enhanced by this culturally rich program. We are also known for our extraordinary outdoor science lab and garden, “Le Jardin de la Connaissance” or “Garden of Knowledge.” It was built and is maintained by our generous business and school community.

Enrichment:

Our school provides a rich variety of programs and activities to enhance and review the curriculum. The reading program is supported by a Reading Recovery Teacher and an additional upper elementary resource teacher.

SPOT, STAR, Word Study, Buddy Reading and Kid Biz 3000, a computer based nonfiction reading enrichment program have also been implemented. The math program is supported by a Math/Science specialist, plus Knowing Math, Math Investigations and Math Recovery strategies. We are also part of a UMD research project which provides us with an instructional support consultant (ICT) to help individualize and improve instruction. SOL review is made fun with Pandamania Review Days in April and May.

Extra-Curricular Programs:

Signal Hill kindergarten classSignal Hill Students are constantly demonstrating their kindness and generosity by helping and supporting many worthwhile causes. This year through the SCA, they raised over $800.00 for our sister school in Texas , Ruby Young Elementary. The money was used to purchase school supplies for the many Katrina victims who are attending that school because they have lost their homes in Louisiana . Students also raised money to support the National Zoo and panda baby, Tai Shan. The children have adopted him as our special mascot and keep a “Pennies for Pandas” change collector in the front hall for his continued support. Additionally the children have raised money for the American Heart Association and the National Diabetes Association.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Our bilingual PTA volunteer program invites all parents and community members to take part in the education of Signal Hill’s children.

WHAT MAKES OUR SCHOOL UNIQUE?

Signal Hill recognitionSignal Hill is a family centered school with a rich international flavor. We have a strong ESOL program which supports students from over twenty-five different countries. Our front hallway is hung with flags donated by the PTA that colorfully reflect our rich diversity. We are a school where each and every child knows they are cared for and that they will achieve and excel.
