ABOUT TYLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Dedicated on October 12, 1968, the school was named for George Grayson Tyler (1869-1938) of Haymarket, who was a teacher in the community and served as Superintendent of Schools from 1909 to 1916.

COMMUNITIES SERVED

Tyler students live in Bristow, Broad Run, Catharpin, Gainesville, and Manassas.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Tyler hosts an ESOL Center, SIGNET/START Center, the Reading Recovery Program, and a Teacher Inservice Program.  Beginning in September 2000, Tyler Elementary will offer an Elementary Foreign Language Specialty Program.

The program will initially be open only to Tyler students, but will eventually include children from other Prince William County Schools.The Spanish language will be taught, beginning in the primary grades, and progressing through future years to the upper grades.

Curriculum objectives will be set and instructional materials obtained during the 1999-2000 school year. Plans for the foreign language program will be finalized through Tyler's Advisory Council.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Tyler students participate in Wee Deliver (U.S Postal Service writing program,) Student Council Association, and SOL remediation.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Parents are invited to take part in the PTO, Advisory Council, and to serve as volunteers and mentors.

The Tyler community believes that "Working Together Kids Will Shine."  School goals, therefore, are developed through a fully collaborative process involving staff and parents.
