PWCS Student Support Services includes supervision of the following programs:  Middle and High School Counseling Program, Home Instruction by Parents, Attendance, and Foreign Exchange, serves as Homeless Education Liaison, and provides assistance on matters related to enrollment such as residency, custody, tuition, and school transfers.

THE SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM

A comprehensive developmental school counseling program is available in each Prince William County middle and high school.  Communication and support among school counselors and school counseling directors is provided through meetings, consultation, and correspondence to ensure effective operation of school counseling programs in compliance with guidelines, regulations, and legal requirements.

ATTENDANCE OFFICERS

Attendance officers, based in each high school and providing service to elementary and middle schools as well, insure that Virginia's compulsory attendance laws are enforced.  They are also instrumental in implementing the school division's Comprehensive Inter-Agency Truancy Prevention/Intervention Plan.  Other duties are:

  • Working with students, parents, and staff regarding problems which may interfere with student progress in school.
  • Making home visits, performing residency checks, and following up on home instruction compliance, as requested.
  • Participating in the Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT).
  • Developing action plans for truant students as mandated by State law.
  • Conducting in-school truancy conferences with parents, students, and staff.
  • Referring all suitable cases to appropriate school and community resources.
  • Representing the School Division in truancy cases in juvenile court.

APPLICATION PROCESS
The application process, monitoring of student progress, school re-entry, legal requirements, and reporting responsibilities are supervised by the Supervisor of Secondary Counseling and Student Support Services.

Home Instruction Partial Enrollment
The Prince William County School Board has approved partial enrollment of home instruction/private school students for up to two credit-bearing courses per semester effective with the 2004-05 school year.  Please contact your child's base middle school or high school for additional information regarding partial enrollment.

Testing Opportunities
High school-aged home instruction students may participate in Advanced Placement (AP) and Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) examinations and are eligible to receive free AP and PSAT testing opportunities to the same extent as students enrolled in Prince William County Public Schools. Parents may contact the school counseling department of their child's base high school during the first week of October 2009 for PSAT registration information and during the first week of March 2010 for AP test registration information.

Parents who do not live in Prince William County must pay tuition for any child who attends Prince William County Public Schools.  Tuition for the 2009-2010 school year is $5,691 in-state and $10,514 out-of-state.
