Belmont 50th Anniversary and School of Excellence CelebrationThe excitement in the room was palatable as the fourth-grade choir kicked off the celebration with a song of welcome to all students, teachers, and special guests. It’s not every day that a school celebrates 50 years, and Belmont Elementary had a party planned for everyone in attendance. Rolling their School of Excellence celebration in with their 50th Anniversary Celebration, it was a program full of acknowledgement and recognition. Special guests at the event included State Secretary of Education, Atif Qarni; State Senator Scott Surovell; Interim School Board Chairman Babur B. Lateef, M.D.; School Board Member, Alyson Satterwhite (Gainesville); and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Steven Walts.

To honor Belmont Elementary on the occasion of celebrating 50 years, state Senator Scott Surovell presented a plaque and special commendation to the school on behalf of the General Assembly of Virginia. This was an acknowledgement of Belmont’s contributions to the local community and for the dedication to providing its students with a strong foundation to be lifelong learners.

Speaking to the students, Senator Surovell said, “Your school has been here a long time and it is the center of your neighborhood. You all come here to get educated, you come for events, people come here to vote, and so it’s very important to celebrate when these kinds of institutions have these kinds of anniversaries.”

State Secretary of Education Atif Qarni was on hand during the celebration and was very excited for the school to not only be celebrating 50 years, but to also be named as a School of Excellence for the 2016-2017 school year. “The reason you’re really successful is because your teachers work really, really hard, along with your school principal and other staff members, to make sure you are successful,” Qarni said.

Helping with the presentation of the School of Excellence flag and plaque, Lateef was excited to celebrate with the students, staff, faculty, and other important guests. He mentioned the huge improvement of Belmont’s SOL scores from the previous year, which was a definite testament to the hard work of the staff and students, “You worked hard, and this celebration is for you. You have done an awesome job!” Lateef said.

Students and teachers played “Are You Smarter Than a Belmont Eagle?” a quiz of knowledge that was grade appropriate for each student and teacher, which gave them a chance to show off their academic prowess, and provided lots of laughter for everyone in attendance. The celebration ended in song and dance, with all in attendance feeling excited, enthusiastic, and happy to end the school day on a positive note.

Congrats on 50 years, and here is to at least 50 more full of fun, learning and excellence! We are #PWCSProud of Belmont Elementary School and its achievements – keep up the fantastic job.
