Colleagues and friends are mourning the passing of Dr. Renee Lacey, director of the Office of Student Management and Alternative Programs, who died unexpectedly on Friday, July 21. A critical incident team will be available in Room 3011 at the Kelly Leadership Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and tomorrow for the community, employees, and students who would like assistance in the grieving process or want to share feelings about this sad loss.

“Dr. Lacey was a powerful student advocate, inspiring colleague, and friend to all who knew her. This is a tremendous loss, and she will be deeply missed,” said Superintendent Steve Walts.

Dr. Lacey was known throughout the School Division, region, and state for pioneering nontraditional education. "She advocated for nontraditional opportunities her entire career and was an expert in that arena, steeped in the latest research, and knew what was going on in every corner of the globe,” said Dr. Walts.

Dr. Lacey’s colleagues say she changed the lives of all who knew her. She had an enormous heart full of love for students and was passionate about helping them succeed.

“She knew that not every student fit into the same box,” said a colleague. “She impacted everyone she met and everyone was her immediate friend. She laughed a lot, was cheerful always, and had endearing terms for those who worked closely with her. It was an honor to know her.”

Renee Lacey joined PWCS in July 1994 as guidance director for Alternative Education and became supervisor for Alternative Education/Student Management and Alternative Programs in 1998. She was appointed director of that office in February 2014.

Dr. Lacey’s passing leaves a big hole in the hearts of those who loved her, and she will be remembered as one of the most special people ever. Her legacy will be carried forward by those she inspired. In Dr. Lacey’s words, “All is well.”
