SOL Pass Rates Solid Divisionwide and Rising Where Needed Most

PWCS student pass rates soared in history while otherwise meeting or exceeding the average pass rates of counterparts across the commonwealth in all five areas covered by Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOL) exams—English reading and writing, history, mathematics, and science. Nearly eclipsing the solid Divisionwide results, the new pass rates on the 2016-17 SOL tests show big successes at schools that devoted extra attention to subjects where students needed extra help.

 “We’re proud of solid results achieved by students in every group, in every subject, and across all our schools,” said Deputy Superintendent Keith Imon. “The most exciting thing is to see our efforts paying off with more and more students succeeding where they hadn’t succeeded before.”

Belmont Elementary missed out on full Virginia accreditation last year, due in part to lagging performance in science. The new results show students’ science pass rates at Belmont soared by 38 points. Belmont students also posted 17-point gains in history, 13 in reading, and 12 points for math pass rates. 

Students at Freedom High School saw a 7-point increase in science pass rates. Freedom students passing the math SOL are up 8 points from last year, real progress in an area that proved challenging for the school last year.

Intense efforts to boost student performance at Fred Lynn Middle School paid off, raising student performance by 5 points in writing and 7 in science.  

Three additional schools had gains of 10 or more points in science: Triangle (15), Occoquan (10), and Potomac View (10).

Nine schools had gains of 10 or more points in history: Neabsco (28), Triangle (14), Penn (12), Ellis (12), Enterprise (12), Gravely (11), Swans Creek (11), Featherstone (11), and Mountain View (10).

Lake Ridge Middle School showed an 11-point gain in writing.

While Divisionwide pass rates for all student closely mirrored Virginia-wide results, several PWCS student sub-groups stood out from their Virginia peers.

 “Results like these always tell us how we’re doing, where we’re improving, and where we can still do better,” added Imon. “We’re committed to learning from all of it, for the continued improvement of our schools and for ever-improving student success.
