A teacher for 20 years, Young is experienced in connecting with children. Using her own books as examples, Young equated her writing process to story gardening — from seed to published book.

Students at Buckland Mills have been prepping for Young's visit by reading her works, including the Finley Flowers chapter book series, and the illustrated chapter book series Haggis and Tank Unleashed.

Fourth-grader Landon was star-struck talking with this author in person. "Meeting her was really cool because we read the book, then got to meet the actual person who wrote it," said Landon. "We got to see how her sloppy copies actually turned into a published book."

For Nithya, also in fourth grade, the story gardening analogy really clicked. "It starts small like a seed and grows into a writing piece," commented Nithya. "We even got to ask her questions. We were able to ask her why she decided to write kids books, and she said she still feels like a kid and wants to tell us stories."

Young's presentation tied to the language arts curriculum for grades one through four. "It is very beneficial for our students to meet authors so that they can see what a love of writing and reading can lead to," said Tammy Hinkle, Buckland Mills Elementary librarian. "Having read many of her stories in preparation for her visit made the experience even more meaningful.

Jessica Young's author-stops also included the PWCS READS 2018 Book Festival held at Stonewall Middle School. Students and their families from several elementary schools were invited to attend this one-day celebration of literacy, where Young again shared her approach to story development and encouragement to be a life-long reader.
