Focusing on the Future – Learning About the Business World

Practicing their marketing and business skills, members of the Freedom High School DECA club reached out to their local business community to participate in and help with their Speed Networking Event. The business leaders who participated as mentors in the event are members of the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce. The students met with the business leaders in a small group setting during their business classes and asked questions, improving their networking skills, and making business connections they can use in the future.

The DECA students told the mentors that they have been busy this fall with a marketing plan to make their own Freedom High School swag, and to raise funds that can be used to cover costs for the district and state competitions that members attend. The students also showed off their business savvy, through a tour of the school store that they operate.

Business and Marketing teacher Nena Sobrio was very excited about this event. “It is a springboard to doing other events with businesses in the area,” she said. “We are using this event to create business partnerships and recruit professionals to come and work with students to help them prepare for their future business endeavors.”
