Headshot of Cassi WeathersbeeCassi Weathersbee, earth science teacher at Patriot High School, has been accepted as a Science Communication Fellow (SCF) with the Ocean Exploration Trust. Weathersbee will be part of an exploration team working on board the exploration vessel Nautilus, studying deep water environments in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Weathersbee will take to the sea for up to three weeks between June and November, to not only conduct research, but also share the expeditions’ discoveries via live webcast and live interactive broadcast. Students and educators on shore can view the 2018 expedition team by visiting the nautilus live website.

To earn this prestigious fellowship, Weathersbee went through an intense application and interview process. The only teacher in Virginia, she was selected from a record number of applicants.

“I am truly excited and honored to have been accepted as a Science Communication Fellow with the Ocean Exploration Trust. I love the ocean and I strive to pass my passion for it to my high school students. I cannot wait to be able to share with them my first-hand experiences on research being conducted in the field. This opportunity will allow me to connect students with scientists and operation staff and to inspire more students to consider STEM careers,” said Weathersbee.

The Ocean Exploration Trust is a non-profit organization founded in 2008 by Dr. Robert Ballard, and leads the field in telepresence-enabled exploration of our deep oceans.
