High school student speaking with a school counselor

Dear PWCS Families, Employees, and Community,

May is a month marked by appreciation, awareness, and achievement, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. Teachers make a difference in the lives of our students, and we are grateful for their persistence, perseverance, and fortitude.

As part of National Mental Health Awareness Month, today also marks the beginning of National Mental Health Awareness Week, observed through May 16. This is a perfect time to congratulate Glenkirk and Gravely Elementary Schools, as well as Lake Ridge and Saunders Middle Schools, as Recognized American School Counselor Association Model Programs for 2024. Our counselors do a fantastic job in meeting our students by name and by need, and I am thrilled about this focus on their significant work.

May is also Military Appreciation Month, and I would like to congratulate Unity Reed High School’s Tech. Sgt. Tina Laing, Lt. Col. Darryl Robinson and the Air Force JROTC team on their historic achievement of winning the Virginia State Drill Team Championships for the third consecutive year. This sustained success is a testament to our students' resilience, our leadership's inclusivity, and our program's integrity.

In celebration of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, I am excited to invite you to the inaugural PWCS Sports Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 at the Kelly Leadership Center. This event will showcase the athletic opportunities available to middle and high school students within our school division. Coaches and athletes will be on hand to discuss the various sports programs and answer any questions you may have.

Looking to the next school year, we are actively recruiting for current vacancies, such as filling our teacher, school counselors, and librarian vacancies for next school year. Join us on Saturday, May 18 for an in-person job fair or mark your calendars for one of two virtual job fairs on June 12 and July 10. Please refer your family, friends, and recent graduates to apply, or consider applying yourself—you belong here!

I wish all mothers and mother figures a restful and enjoyable Mother’s Day weekend.

Sincerely,
Dr. McDade signature
